How to write an effective dissertation paper

Students preparing to write a dissertation paper are indeed aware that it is a tough task. But there is no cause for alarm once the formula for writing effective dissertation paper is clearly understood.

A PhD dissertation is an elaborate well-laid out presentation and the research conducted to support the dissertation must be utterly original. That alone is an effective dissertation paper that highlights original contributions by the writer.

The standard major components of an effective dissertation paper should consist of - Identification, Abstract, Introduction, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgement of Sources, Bibliography

Identification is nothing more than mentioning the title of the dissertation paper, the name of the author and a note on the nature of dissertation.

The Abstract, as the word indicates, is the synopsis of the entire content of the dissertation possibly running into not more than a couple of paragraphs. The Abstract should invariably consist of three things – details of the problem selected, the solution recommended, and any other inferences arrived at.

In the Introduction section, the question or problem that the dissertation attempts to solve must be categorically stated.  If the problem the dissertation answers is not explicitly stated, it will be difficult for the examiners to assess the work done.

It is essential to explain in the introduction section how the discussion has been structured.  It may be that the writer might have adopted several different methods to strengthen the arguments and might have presented a couple of case studies to further support the contention..

The discussion is the main body or the heart and lungs of the dissertation .  It is where the writer analyses in-depth the problem raised in the dissertation and offers a series of logic and reasoning to justify the possible solution suggested. Footnotes should not be indiscriminately used.  It is preferable that all points should be elaborately explained in the text of the discussion itself.

The conclusion section is meant for presenting the answer to the problem raised in the dissertation as the culmination of reasoning flowing from the discussion.  As a dissertation writer, you can also suggest lines of further enquiry for any part of the unresolved problems.

In the Acknowledgement section, the writer has to mention names of persons who offered help to complete the dissertation.  It is only to be expected that library staff will have helped you access the right books and journals, the teaching staff may have intermittently offered clarifications and guidance, people in industry may have granted interviews.

Finally the Bibliography and References section is for providing details of all source materials and other references that the writer must have consulted - the name/s of the author/s, the title, the date of publication, in the case of a journal paper — the name of the journal, in the case of a book — the publisher.  To refer to electronic media, see Li, X & Crane, and N.

The essence of a dissertation paper is critical thinking, forthright analysis and cogent presentation. A dissertation expatiates on principles, on the lessons learnt, and not merely stating the facts behind them. Each statement in a dissertation paper must be correct and defensible in a logical and rational manner. Please remember that the discussions in a dissertation must satisfy the exactitude applied to mathematics and science.
