What are the Steps for Writing Your Own Resume?

A resume is an expression of one's attitudes and a presentation of his capabilities. When a cross-section of professionals appoint resume-writers, another mini-section drafts its own resumes. Those who are interested in writing resumes can make an attempt by following certain steps.

First Impression is the Best Impression:

Any normal resume will not create a strong impression in the minds of the readers. For the same to be powerful, the resume must also be strong - the message, the word power, the style of the sentences and the format of presentation. If it is classified as the ordinary and average, it will evoke a run-of-the-mill gradation and you become just an also-ran. In any interview, as soon as you enter, you are judged by the dress you wear - color of the apparel and design of the dress and then, the mannerism, gait and walk follow to be followed by Q&A session to evaluate your intellectual strength. So also, resume is akin to the attire. It should be weighty to create a powerful impression. Please note that casuals cannot be worn for the interview. Likewise, resumes cannot be taken as a lighter consideration.

When you attempt for a career, your format should compliment your aspirations. If you try for a job in your chosen field and if you possess sufficient experience, you have to put forward an account following a chronological order. The stints of your past career, year wise (if possible, date wise also) have to be put on record. If you opt for a new avocation, you have to quote your capabilities in this regard and assurance to the effect that you will employ all your skills for the growth of the organization. You have to stress the functional aspects of your future responsibilities.

  • No spelling mistakes. Be thorough with words. If doubtful, refer to a dictionary.
  • Capitals and punctuations have to be taken care of.
  • Lettering should not irritate the eyes of the reader.
  • Include your name, address, phone number and e-mail ID.
  • Laser print your labor on high-quality white paper.
  • See to it that your note of introduction does not assume the proportions of advertisement. So, be mild on your achievements with a precise and to-the-point presentation.

Past Performance Related to Future Commitments:

Your past performance may not be very great but, they can show your commitment. If you feel that you have really contributed to the profit of the organization, social standing among the competitors, higher rating by the consumers/customers/clients, you can pin-point them because, if not quoted, in the resume, your future employer may not be able to form a positive evaluation about your calibre and capacity.

Eliminate the Normal, Usual Drawbacks:

  • As far as possible, avoid First Person Singulars. To be frank, avoid "I" factor. Even though it is a statement which indicates that you are frank and forthright, it leads to a probability of your future employer misunderstanding your attitude.
  • Do not include personal information such as, ethnicity, mother-tongue, marriage, family reputation, relative's status etc... Because some employers don't encourage such statements. In personal interview if such details are required by the interviewer or the employer himself, you can mention them.
  • Photographs to be avoided, if not asked for. Certain companies are specific about photographs and there, you have to comply with the stipulations. If you try for a modeling assignment in an ad agency or acting role in a film company, you can enclose your photographs.
  • Reasons for leaving the previous company need not be explained.
  • Additional documents such as recommendation letters, certificates, testimonials, work samples are to be avoided. Employers don't need them in the initial stage of resume acceptance. In interview, if needed, you can show them.
  • No mention about previous salary and future expectation. In interviews, if the employer needs such info, you can quote your preference.
  • References not to be quoted, unless asked for. It leads to undue influence.

These are the basic points in preparing resume. Follow them meticulously. You are going to be a winning horse.
