A research paper analyzes a perspective or argues a point. The finished research paper should be the way you think backed up by other's ideas and information. For example, if a history student wants to write about a Vietnam War then he has to do a research work like reading news articles, books and meet veterans to develop his/her research paper and support it with evidence.
While writing an essay you will generally write what you personally know and think about a subject. The steps involved in writing a research paper are choosing a topic, finding information, defining thesis, making a tentative outline, organizing notes, writing the first draft, revising the outline and draft and typing the final paper. There are different documentation styles, but choose a specific style like MLA or APA. The sentence should have proper punctuations and written in a proper style.
