Tips and mistakes to be avoided while writing a research paper

A research paper may be describedas adocument that reflects intelligent inferences after researching several sources on aparticular subject. The task of writing a research paper, though daunting, can beaccomplished withless strain if itis planned in advanceand a set procedure with followed. The entire procedure of writing a research paper can be summarized as:

Step 1: Carefully select an appropriate subject preferably in consultation with your professor. For a person endowed with a refined intellect, there could be many subjects worthy of being researched into. For instance, you can select some portion of a text book on a subject that is of interest to you. Try to see if everything stated therein is true or are there any grey areas. After all, your research paper is nothing more than an attempt to write a well-organized answer to some unanswered question, using incontrovertible facts to substantiate your contention. The most common mistake most students make is hurriedly choosing a wrong subject and fumbling later.

Step 2: Identify various source materials including books, records, other research papers etc. There will be abundant source materials available within the university/institution campus. You should make it a point to avoid relying on source materials that are beyond 25 years old unless the research subject you have chosen entails research from a historical point of view. Another common mistake many students do is to search for sources in a haphazard and disorganized manner. Instead make a list of fragmented subject-headings and search for source materials in a systematic manner.

Step 3: Preparing the basic notes for elaborate writing into a thesis later. For preparing the notes, jot down indiscriminately all relevant and useful information including quotes, footnotes etc. Make these notes separately for each source and do not fail to note the author's name, book title, page number etc. Whenever you reproduce the original text of any author, you are bound to cite the source in detail - lest it be construed as plagiarism.

Step 4: Writing out the first draft which can be edited later. Take your time in writing the first draft. Examine what your subject is and the purpose of the thesis and what kind of material you have found. Review all the collected notes and fit them into various sub-headings. Develop a coherent and definite structure.

Step 5: Bringing out the final research paper. Follow the old tested formula. In the introduction part, make a statement of purpose. Write your entire research work in the main body of the paper. In the third part, create summary of what you had said in the body of the paper followed by concluding remarks.

Finally, make your thesis paper presentable and reader-worthy. Use short crisp sentences and completely avoid all ambiguities. Do not repeat the same ideas giving the reader the impression that you are short of substance. Before submitting the research paper, try to read it as if you were outsider and the written matter is unfamiliar to you. This is good way of assessing how well the paper has come out and whether the language flow is perfect. Check for proper spelling, phrasing, punctuation and sentence construction.
